The Edward L. Ryerson is a Great Lakes freighter that was built in 1960 by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Wisconsin. It is 730 feet long and can carry up to 25,300 tons of cargo. The ship is named after Edward L. Ryerson, a prominent businessman and philanthropist who was a part owner of Inland Steel Company.
The ship has had a long career, moving iron ore and other bulk cargoes throughout the Great Lakes region. In 1998, it was retired from active service and was sold to a group of investors who began restoring it as a museum ship. The Edward L. Ryerson Museum opened to the public in 2000 and allows visitors to tour the ship and learn about its history and the history of Great Lakes shipping.
Despite being retired from active service, the Edward L. Ryerson remains an impressive sight on the Great Lakes. With its distinctive green and white paint scheme and towering stacks, it is a testament to the important role that shipping has played in the region's history and economy.
